For Bangladeshi students, the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exam is a very important step. Your HSC GPA is often used by colleges, scholarship boards, and employers to judge how well you did in school. This guide goes over the official HSC grading system, shows you how to figure out your GPA (including the optional fourth subject rule), and gives examples for Science, Business Studies, and Humanities. You can get accurate results right away by using our free HSC GPA calculator.

What Is HSC GPA?

Your HSC GPA (Grade Point Average) summarises your performance across all HSC subjects on a scale of 0 to 5. Each subject is scored out of 100, converted into a letter grade (A+, A, etc.) and then into a grade point. The average of these grade points becomes your GPA. A GPA of 5.00 (grade A+) reflects outstanding achievement; 0.00 indicates fail. A minimum of 33 marks (D = 1.00) is required to pass

This grading scale is mandated by the Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. All education boards (Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, etc.) follow the same scale for Science, Business Studies and Humanities.

How to Use the HSC GPA Calculator

Our calculator follows official guidelines and is available in both English and Bangla. To calculate your GPA:

  1. Select your group: Science, Business Studies, or Humanities. The subject list will update automatically.

  2. Choose input type: Enter letter grades (A+, A, A‑, etc.) or numeric grade points (5.00, 4.00, etc.). You can also input marks (0–100); the tool converts them into grade points.

  3. Select your subjects: Compulsory subjects are prefilled; choose elective and optional subjects from the dropdown lists. Duplicate subjects are disabled, and the tool prompts you if any grade is missing.

  4. Enter grades or points: For each subject, select the appropriate letter grade or point. If you enter marks, the calculator will assign the grade point based on the table above.

  5. Click “Calculate GPA” – The result section shows a table with your subjects, marks, letter grades and grade points. It displays your final GPA, corresponding letter grade, and pass/fail status. You can reset the inputs, print the results or download them as a PDF.

HSC GPA Calculation Formula & Optional Subject Rule

The HSC curriculum consists of seven subjects: 3 compulsory, 3 elective and 1 optional (4th) subject. The optional subject follows a special rule:

  • Sum the grade points of the six compulsory and elective subjects.

  • Subtract 2.00 from the optional subject’s grade point and add only the excess points. For example, if you score an A+ (5.00) in the optional subject, the bonus is 5.00 – 2.00 = 3.00 points; an A (4.00) yields 2.00 bonus points; a D (1.00) contributes 0 (it does not lower your GPA).

  • Divide the total by 6 (the number of non‑optional subjects) to obtain your final GPA

This formula ensures that the optional subject can only improve your GPA; a low optional grade doesn’t hurt your average.

Without 4th Subject GPA

Some students wish to exclude the optional subject entirely. To calculate GPA without the 4th subject:

  • Assign grade points to your grades: A+ = 5.00, A = 4.00, A‑ = 3.50, B = 3.00, C = 2.00, D = 1.00, F = 0.

  • Add the points of your three best subjects (or the subjects you want to include).

  • Divide the total by 3 to obtain your GPA.

This method is useful if you are applying to a program that does not count the optional subject.

HSC GPA Calculation Examples

Science Group Example

SubjectMarks (example)Letter GradeGrade Point
Bangla75A4.00
English75A4.00
Information & Communication Technology85A+5.00
Physics85A+5.00
Chemistry85A+5.00
Biology85A+5.00
Optional – Higher Math85A+5.00

Calculation:

  • Sum of six compulsory + elective subjects = 4 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 28.

  • Optional bonus = 5.00 – 2.00 = 3.00.

  • Total grade points = 28 + 3 = 31.

  • GPA = 31 ÷ 6 ≈ 5.00 (Golden A+).

Business Studies Example

EnglishA4.00
ICTB3.00
AccountingA+5.00
Business EntrepreneurshipA4.00
Finance & BankingA‑3.50
Optional – Higher Math or Agricultural StudiesB3.00

Calculation:

  • Sum of six subjects = 4 + 4 + 3 + 5 + 4 + 3.5 = 23.5.

  • Optional bonus = 3.00 – 2.00 = 1.00.

  • Total points = 23.5 + 1 = 24.5.

  • GPA = 24.5 ÷ 6 ≈ 4.08 (A).

Humanities Example

BanglaB3.00
EnglishB3.00
ICTC2.00
Civics & CitizenshipA4.00
History of Bangladesh & World CivilizationB3.00
EconomicsA‑3.50
Optional – Home ScienceA4.00

Calculation:

  • Sum of six subjects = 3 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 3.5 = 18.5.

  • Optional bonus = 4.00 – 2.00 = 2.00.

  • Total points = 18.5 + 2 = 20.5.

  • GPA = 20.5 ÷ 6 ≈ 3.42 (A‑).

These examples illustrate how a strong optional subject can boost your GPA and how the calculation differs across groups.

Calculate HSC GPA Without 4th Subject

If you exclude the optional subject, choose any three subjects, convert their grades to points (A+=5.00, A=4.00, etc.) and divide the total by 3. For example, if you scored A+, A and B in three subjects, the GPA = (5.00 + 4.00 + 3.00) ÷ 3 = 4.00.

Bangla Guide: এসএসসি GPA হিসাব করার সহজ উপায়

দ্রুত ও সহজে HSC GPA হিসাব করার নিয়ম এখানে বাংলায় সংক্ষেপে দেওয়া হলো:

  • গ্রেড স্কেল: ৮০–১০০ = A+ (GPA 5.00), ৭০–৭৯ = A (GPA 4.00), ৬০–৬৯ = A‑ (GPA 3.50), ৫০–৫৯ = B (GPA 3.00), ৪০–৪৯ = C (GPA 2.00), ৩৩–৩৯ = D (GPA 1.00), ০–৩২ = F (GPA 0.00).
